Diagram ref no 18
Manufactured to the required dimensions, this seal helps maintain correct gearbox lubrication and protects surrounding components from oil contamination.
What Does It Do?
The input shaft oil seal creates an oil-tight barrier between the rotating gearbox shaft and the surrounding transmission housing.
It helps retain gearbox oil, preventing leakage and ensuring internal transmission components receive the lubrication required for reliable operation.
Why Is It Important?
The Porsche PDK gearbox relies on the correct transmission fluid level for lubrication, cooling and operation.
A leaking shaft seal can result in:
- Transmission fluid loss
- Oil contamination around the gearbox
- Reduced lubrication
- Increased internal component wear
- Potential gearbox damage if fluid loss continues
Replacing a defective seal helps restore the gearbox's sealing integrity.
Why Does It Fail?
Over time, the oil seal can deteriorate due to:
- Ageing and hardening of the sealing material
- Repeated heat cycles
- Wear against the rotating shaft
- Contaminated transmission fluid
- Incorrect installation
- Damage to the shaft sealing surface
These conditions can reduce sealing effectiveness and allow transmission fluid to escape.
When Should It Be Replaced?
Replace the oil seal if:
- Transmission fluid is leaking from the shaft sealing area
- The seal is cracked, hardened or damaged
- Oil contamination is visible around the gearbox housing
- The seal is disturbed during gearbox or clutch repairs
- A transmission rebuild requires replacement sealing components
Always confirm the source of a leak before replacing the seal.
Checks & Installation
Inspect the shaft sealing surface and surrounding gearbox housing for damage.
Remove the old seal carefully and install the replacement squarely to the specified depth using suitable installation tools.
Follow Porsche workshop procedures and check the correct transmission fluid level after repairs.
