Diagram Ref No 1
Mounted at the rear axle, the air spring uses pressurised air to support the weight of the vehicle and maintain the required ride height. The air suspension system can vary the pressure within the spring according to vehicle load and selected suspension settings, helping keep the rear of the vehicle correctly levelled.
Unlike a conventional steel coil spring, the air spring relies on a flexible reinforced air bellows. Over time, repeated suspension movement, ageing, temperature changes and road contamination can cause the rubber bellows or seals to deteriorate and begin leaking.
What This Product Does:
- Supports the weight of the vehicle at the rear axle.
- Maintains the correct rear ride height.
- Works with the air suspension system to provide automatic load levelling.
- Allows suspension height to be adjusted where supported by the vehicle.
- Compensates for passengers and luggage loads.
- Helps keep the vehicle level from side to side.
- Contributes to stable and predictable handling.
- Provides springing action as the suspension moves over uneven road surfaces.
- Works together with the rear shock absorber to provide controlled suspension movement.
- Helps maintain the intended suspension geometry and ride characteristics.
The air spring is responsible primarily for supporting the vehicle and providing the spring force. Damping of suspension movement is handled by the associated shock absorber.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Common signs of air spring deterioration or leakage include:
- Rear of the vehicle sitting lower than normal.
- One rear corner sitting lower than the opposite side.
- Vehicle dropping in height after being parked.
- Suspension taking longer than normal to reach the correct ride height.
- Air suspension warning message or warning light.
- Frequent operation of the air suspension compressor.
- Compressor running for unusually long periods.
- Hissing noise from the rear suspension.
- Visible cracking or deterioration of the air spring bellows.
- Air leaks around seals or connections.
- Vehicle unable to maintain the selected ride height.
- Suspension becoming excessively firm or uncomfortable.
- Uneven vehicle stance when carrying a load.
- Slow or non-responsive height adjustment.
A vehicle that sinks while parked and then rises again when started commonly indicates that air pressure is escaping somewhere within the suspension system, with the air spring being one possible source.
Why Replacement Matters:
An air spring must remain airtight to support the vehicle correctly. Even a relatively small leak forces the suspension compressor to operate more frequently in an attempt to maintain the required pressure.
Continued operation with a leaking air spring can result in:
- Incorrect ride height.
- Uneven vehicle stance.
- Reduced suspension performance.
- Changes in handling and stability.
- Increased compressor running time.
- Accelerated wear of the air suspension compressor.
- Additional stress on valves, lines and other suspension components.
- Loss of automatic load-levelling performance.
Replacing a leaking or deteriorated air spring restores the system's ability to hold pressure and maintain the correct vehicle height.
