Diagram ref no 28
Designed for Porsche Boxster and Cayman models equipped with the PDK dual-clutch gearbox, this pipe forms part of the transmission oil cooling system, providing a return passage for oil circulating through the gearbox heat exchanger.
It is a practical replacement for an original pipe that has developed corrosion, damage or leakage.
What Does It Do?
The oil cooler return pipe carries transmission oil through the return side of the PDK gearbox cooling circuit.
During operation, the PDK transmission generates heat through its internal gears and clutch assemblies. The oil cooling system helps manage this heat by circulating transmission oil through a heat exchanger.
The return pipe completes part of this circulation route, allowing oil to flow back through the transmission cooling system.
Why Is It Important?
The PDK gearbox relies on correctly circulating transmission oil to maintain suitable operating temperatures and lubrication.
A damaged or leaking return pipe can result in:
- Loss of transmission oil
- Oil residue around gearbox cooling connections
- Reduced efficiency of the oil cooling circuit
- Potential gearbox overheating
- Transmission warning messages if operating conditions become abnormal
Maintaining leak-free oil pipes helps protect the gearbox and supports dependable transmission operation.
Why Do Oil Cooler Return Pipes Fail?
Over time, the original pipe may deteriorate due to exposure to road salt, moisture, temperature changes and vibration.
Common causes of failure include:
- Corrosion affecting exposed pipe sections
- Damaged or deteriorated connection seals
- Physical damage during gearbox maintenance
- Fatigue around pipe bends or mounting points
- Incorrectly secured or strained connections
When Should It Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended when the return pipe shows visible corrosion, cracking, deformation or signs of transmission oil leakage.
It should also be inspected when investigating gearbox oil loss or servicing the PDK heat exchanger and associated cooling lines.
Any suspected transmission oil leak should be investigated promptly to prevent potential gearbox damage.
Installation Notes
Inspect the pipe mounting points, connection fittings and seals before installation.
Replace damaged sealing components as required and ensure the pipe is routed correctly without unnecessary strain. Use the manufacturer's specified tightening procedures.
Following installation, check the transmission oil level using the correct Porsche PDK service procedure and inspect all connections for leaks.
