Diagram Ref No 20
Designed as an aftermarket replacement for the original transmission output component, the flange provides a secure mounting point for the driveshaft's inner CV joint. It helps ensure engine power is transferred effectively from the gearbox differential to the rear wheels.
An economical replacement for damaged or worn original flanges, making it suitable for gearbox repairs, driveshaft servicing and drivetrain maintenance.
What Does It Do?
The long driveshaft flange forms the connection between the gearbox differential output and the rear driveshaft.
As power passes through the manual transmission, the differential directs rotational force towards the rear wheels. The driveshaft flange provides the mechanical interface that transfers this force to the driveshaft assembly.
Its extended design accommodates the specific gearbox output arrangement, ensuring the driveshaft connects in the correct position.
Why Is It Important?
The driveshaft flange is subjected to repeated changes in
torque during acceleration, gear changes and engine braking.
A secure flange connection helps maintain smooth power
delivery while keeping the driveshaft correctly attached to the transmission.
A worn or damaged flange may contribute to:
Clunking when accelerating or releasing the throttle Vibration through the drivetrain Excessive movement at the inner driveshaft joint Wear around the flange mounting points Increased stress on the driveshaft and differential output
Similar symptoms can also result from worn CV joints, gearbox mountings or other drivetrain components.
Why Do Driveshaft Flanges Fail?
Although designed to withstand considerable mechanical loads, the flange can become damaged through wear or incorrect installation.
Common causes include:
- Wear or damage to the internal splines
- Repeated high-torque loading
- Damaged driveshaft bolt holes
- Loose or incorrectly tightened retaining hardware
- Corrosion affecting the mating surfaces
- Accidental damage during gearbox or driveshaft removal
When Should It Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended when inspection reveals damaged splines, cracks, distortion or excessive wear around the driveshaft mounting face.
The flange should also be inspected when replacing CV joints, removing the driveshaft or carrying out gearbox repairs.
A flange that cannot provide a secure connection should be replaced rather than reused.
Why Choose OE Match?
OE Match provides aftermarket replacement components for Porsche maintenance and mechanical repairs.
This long driveshaft flange offers an alternative to the Genuine Porsche component, allowing owners and workshops to replace worn transmission output hardware while retaining the intended gearbox and driveshaft arrangement.
It provides a practical solution for restoring the original drivetrain configuration without unnecessary modifications.
Installation Notes
Inspect the gearbox differential output, splines, shaft seals, retaining ring and driveshaft CV joint before fitting.
Ensure the replacement flange is correctly seated and use the appropriate retaining hardware and Porsche tightening specifications.
Check the gearbox output seals for leaks and confirm that the driveshaft is securely attached after installation.
