What This Product Does
Also called a propeller shaft, the cardan shaft links the transmission output with the front-axle final drive on the specified AWD applications. It rotates under load to convey torque between these assemblies; it is not a differential or an individual wheel driveshaft.
Functions
- Conveys rotational drive towards the front differential.
- Links the transmission output and front final-drive assembly.
- Replaces a shaft identified as worn or damaged during inspection.
Technical Details
- OE Match replacement
- Reference number: 99742102001.
Symptoms of Fault
- Vibration as road speed rises or during acceleration.
- Clunks beneath the car when drive takes up.
- Shudder when moving away.
- Rumbling around the driveline.
- Excessive movement at shaft connections.
- Grease escaping around a joint or a torn gaiter.
- Visible deformation, corrosion or underside impact damage.
Why Replacement Matters
Renewal may be appropriate when inspection traces noise or vibration to shaft wear, joint damage or distortion. These symptoms can also originate from tyres, wheels or drivetrain mountings, so establish the cause before replacing the shaft. During an AWD overhaul, assess the associated connections, gaiter and fixings rather than assuming they are included with this component.
Where it fits on the car
This cardan shaft fits within the all-wheel-drive transmission / driveline system, transferring drive towards the front axle on applicable Porsche 996 and 997 models.
FAQs
Does vibration confirm a shaft fault?
No. Wheel and tyre problems, as well as worn engine, gearbox or differential mountings, can produce similar symptoms.
Can the existing shaft be repaired?
Repairability depends on its construction and condition. A driveline specialist should assess joint wear, damage and balance before recommending repair or replacement.
What should be checked before fitting?
Confirm the part reference, transmission code and applicable equipment codes. Follow the vehicle-specific fitting procedure for orientation, alignment and tightening torques.
