What This Product Does
The alternator converts engine-driven rotation into electricity for battery charging and the vehicle's electrical equipment. Its drive belt transfers the mechanical input needed for generation; belt condition and alignment therefore matter when investigating charging problems.
Functions
- Replenishes battery charge during engine operation.
- Supplies electricity to vehicle systems.
- Transfers engine rotation through the belt drive.
Symptoms of Fault
- Charging warning lamp or insufficient charging voltage.
- Repeated battery discharge and difficult starting.
- Lights that dim or flicker.
- Intermittent electrical operation.
- Whining bearings or a squealing belt.
These signs can have other causes, so confirm the fault before replacing components.
Why Replacement Matters
Renewing a confirmed faulty alternator addresses inadequate or inconsistent charging. Inspecting the belt, pulley alignment, battery and cable connections at the same time helps identify related faults rather than leaving their cause unresolved.
FAQs
Does a flat battery prove the alternator has failed?
No. Battery condition, wiring and earth connections also need checking.
What should be tested before replacement?
Check charging behaviour under electrical load, together with belt condition and the main power and earth connections.
Are all Manual and Tiptronic applications identical?
No. Use the transmission-specific dates above and verify the recorded engine cutoffs where applicable.
