Every car has its weak points one of the items to keep an eye on is the coolant recovery tank. Over time it becomes brittle and has a tendency to crack and leak coolant. A simple preventative measure is to replace your tank with a genuine Porsche recovery tank.

Diagram ref no 12
A faulty sensor can cause incorrect low-coolant warnings or may fail to report a genuine drop in coolant level. Replacing a defective sensor restores an important part of the cooling system's monitoring and warning function.
What Does the Coolant Bottle Level Sensor Do?
The coolant level sensor is fitted to the coolant expansion tank, also commonly referred to as the coolant bottle or reservoir.
Its job is to monitor whether the coolant is at the required level. If the level falls below the specified point, the sensor communicates this to the vehicle's electronics so a warning can be displayed to the driver.
A correctly functioning coolant level sensor helps:
- Monitor coolant level within the expansion tank
- Alert the driver when coolant becomes too low
- Provide early warning of coolant loss
- Reduce the risk of driving with insufficient coolant
- Support correct operation of the cooling system warning functions
The sensor does not measure engine temperature and does not control coolant flow. Its purpose is specifically to monitor coolant level.
Why Is Coolant Level Monitoring Important?
The engine cooling system relies on having the correct quantity of coolant circulating through the engine, radiators and associated components.
A falling coolant level can indicate a leak or another cooling system problem. If coolant loss continues unnoticed, the cooling system may become unable to control engine temperature effectively.
The coolant level sensor therefore provides an important early warning, allowing the cooling system to be inspected before a low coolant condition develops into a more serious problem.
Why Do Coolant Level Sensors Fail?
Coolant level sensors operate in a demanding environment and can deteriorate with age and repeated heating and cooling cycles.
Common causes of failure include:
- Age-related electrical deterioration
- Repeated temperature cycling
- Internal sensor failure
- Coolant contamination or deposits
- Corrosion at electrical connections
- Damaged wiring or connectors
- Damage during expansion tank removal or replacement
A problem with the expansion tank, wiring or electrical connector can produce similar symptoms, so these components should also be inspected before replacing the sensor.
When Should the Coolant Level Sensor Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered if:
- A low coolant warning remains on despite the coolant being at the correct level
- Low coolant warnings appear intermittently without an actual loss of coolant
- The sensor fails diagnostic testing
- The sensor or electrical connection is physically damaged
- Corrosion is present around the connection
- The sensor has been damaged during cooling system maintenance
- The coolant expansion tank is being replaced and the existing sensor is no longer serviceable
If the vehicle displays a low coolant warning, the actual coolant level should always be checked first. A warning should not automatically be assumed to be caused by a faulty sensor.
Important Cooling System Checks
If the coolant level is genuinely low, the cause should be investigated rather than simply topping up the expansion tank.
Potential coolant loss can occur from components such as hoses, expansion tanks, radiators, water pumps, seals and other cooling system connections.
Replacing the level sensor is appropriate when the sensor itself has been identified as faulty.

What This Product Does:
- Moves coolant to and from the coolant reservoir
- Helps maintain proper coolant level and circulation
- Supports cooling system pressure balance during temperature changes
- Prevents overheating by ensuring consistent coolant flow
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
- Coolant leaks near the reservoir or along the hose line
- Low coolant warning light
- Frequent coolant top-offs
- Sweet coolant smell from the engine bay
- Coolant residue or staining around hose connections
- Cracks, splits, or swelling in the hose material
- Soft, spongy, or brittle rubber texture
- Pressure-related seepage around clamps or fittings
- Engine running hotter than normal if coolant loss becomes severe
- Replacing a worn reservoir coolant hose is important because it helps maintain proper coolant circulation and supports stable cooling system pressure. Over time, heat and constant exposure to coolant can cause the hose to crack, weaken, or leak.
- If the hose fails, it may lead to coolant loss, poor pressure regulation, and overheating. Even small leaks can gradually reduce coolant levels and put the engine at risk of serious damage.
- Installing a new hose helps prevent leaks, restores reliable coolant flow, and protects the engine by keeping the cooling system operating efficiently.

What This Product Does:
- Allows trapped air to escape during coolant circulation
- Helps prevent air pockets in the cooling system
- Supports stable coolant pressure regulation
- Maintains consistent engine operating temperature
- Promotes efficient coolant flow throughout the system
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
- Coolant leaks near the expansion tank or bleeder valve connection
- Low coolant warning light or frequent coolant top-offs
- Sweet coolant smell from the engine bay
- Coolant residue or staining around hose fittings
- Cracks, splits, or brittle hose material
- Air trapped in the cooling system, causing gurgling sounds
- Fluctuating engine temperature or inconsistent temperature gauge readings
- Overheating, especially after coolant service or refilling
- Steam from under the hood in severe cases
- This hose plays a key role in allowing the cooling system to properly vent air and maintain stable pressure. If it becomes cracked, brittle, or blocked, air can remain trapped in the system, leading to inconsistent coolant circulation and temperature fluctuations.
- Failure to replace a worn hose may result in coolant leaks, pressure imbalance, overheating, and reduced cooling efficiency. Air pockets in the system can also place additional strain on other cooling components.
- Replacing the hose helps ensure proper system bleeding, prevents leaks, and protects the engine by maintaining reliable temperature control and cooling system performance.
