This coolant expansion tank cap is a direct replacement for Porsche 996 (1998–2005) and also fits Boxster (986/987), Cayman, and 997 models, upgrading earlier versions with improved sealing and pressure control.
Fits:
Porsche 996 1998 - 2005
Porsche 997.1 2005 - 2008
Porsche 986 Boxster 1997 - 2004
Porsche 987.1 Boxster 2005 - 2008
Porsche 987C.1 Cayman 2005 - 2008
Diagram ref no 5
This cap serves as the pressure seal for the coolant expansion tank, keeping the cooling system at the correct pressure. It regulates venting to the overflow reservoir, preventing blowback, leaks, and overpressure while helping avoid coolant loss, boiling, and overheating.
It replaces earlier versions: 99610644700, 99610644701, 99610644702, 99610644703
Why replacement matters:
• An old or worn cap may fail to hold pressure, causing coolant to boil, vaporize, or overflow
• A bad cap can allow air to enter the cooling system, leading to overheating, hot spots, or poor cooling performance
• A leaking or weak cap can lead to gradual coolant loss, requiring refills and risking engine damage
Installing an OE-Match version restores proper pressure control, reliable sealing, and helps maintain engine temperature stability.

Coolant Bottle Level Sensor
Restore reliable coolant level monitoring with this OE Match
Coolant Bottle Level Sensor. The coolant level sensor monitors the amount of coolant
within the expansion tank and allows the vehicle's warning system to alert the
driver if the coolant level falls too low.

Diagram ref no 12
A faulty sensor can cause incorrect low-coolant warnings or may fail to report a genuine drop in coolant level. Replacing a defective sensor restores an important part of the cooling system's monitoring and warning function.
What Does the Coolant Bottle Level Sensor Do?
The coolant level sensor is fitted to the coolant expansion tank, also commonly referred to as the coolant bottle or reservoir.
Its job is to monitor whether the coolant is at the required level. If the level falls below the specified point, the sensor communicates this to the vehicle's electronics so a warning can be displayed to the driver.
A correctly functioning coolant level sensor helps:
- Monitor coolant level within the expansion tank
- Alert the driver when coolant becomes too low
- Provide early warning of coolant loss
- Reduce the risk of driving with insufficient coolant
- Support correct operation of the cooling system warning functions
The sensor does not measure engine temperature and does not control coolant flow. Its purpose is specifically to monitor coolant level.
Why Is Coolant Level Monitoring Important?
The engine cooling system relies on having the correct quantity of coolant circulating through the engine, radiators and associated components.
A falling coolant level can indicate a leak or another cooling system problem. If coolant loss continues unnoticed, the cooling system may become unable to control engine temperature effectively.
The coolant level sensor therefore provides an important early warning, allowing the cooling system to be inspected before a low coolant condition develops into a more serious problem.
Why Do Coolant Level Sensors Fail?
Coolant level sensors operate in a demanding environment and can deteriorate with age and repeated heating and cooling cycles.
Common causes of failure include:
- Age-related electrical deterioration
- Repeated temperature cycling
- Internal sensor failure
- Coolant contamination or deposits
- Corrosion at electrical connections
- Damaged wiring or connectors
- Damage during expansion tank removal or replacement
A problem with the expansion tank, wiring or electrical connector can produce similar symptoms, so these components should also be inspected before replacing the sensor.
When Should the Coolant Level Sensor Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered if:
- A low coolant warning remains on despite the coolant being at the correct level
- Low coolant warnings appear intermittently without an actual loss of coolant
- The sensor fails diagnostic testing
- The sensor or electrical connection is physically damaged
- Corrosion is present around the connection
- The sensor has been damaged during cooling system maintenance
- The coolant expansion tank is being replaced and the existing sensor is no longer serviceable
If the vehicle displays a low coolant warning, the actual coolant level should always be checked first. A warning should not automatically be assumed to be caused by a faulty sensor.
Important Cooling System Checks
If the coolant level is genuinely low, the cause should be investigated rather than simply topping up the expansion tank.
Potential coolant loss can occur from components such as hoses, expansion tanks, radiators, water pumps, seals and other cooling system connections.
Replacing the level sensor is appropriate when the sensor itself has been identified as faulty.

Every car has its weak points one of the items to keep an eye on is the coolant recovery tank. Over time it becomes brittle and has a tendency to crack and leak coolan. A simple preventative measure is to replace your tank with an OE Match coolant expansion tank

What This Product Does
The reservoir accommodates changes in coolant volume during engine warm-up and cooling. It forms part of the sealed cooling circuit, working with the pressure cap and connected hoses.
Functions
- Holds coolant within the cooling circuit.
- Provides space for thermal expansion.
- Accommodates coolant as its volume changes with temperature.
Technical Details
- Part reference: 97010615103.
Symptoms of Fault
- Unexplained, gradual coolant loss.
- Repeated coolant-level alerts.
- A sweet odour around the reservoir.
- Dried deposits along seams or hose connections.
- Fine cracks or damp patches on the tank.
- Coolant traces appearing after parking.
- Gurgling associated with low coolant or trapped air.
- An unexpected increase in engine temperature.
Why Replacement Matters
Repeated heating and cooling can leave an ageing reservoir brittle, allowing small fractures or seam leaks to develop. Renewing a confirmed faulty tank addresses that source of coolant loss. Inspect the cap, hoses and clamps at the same time, since nearby faults can produce similar symptoms.
FAQs
Does a coolant warning prove the tank has failed?
No. Check the actual level and investigate leaks, the sender and its connections before deciding which component needs renewal.
How can a small leak be located?
Inspect seams and hose necks for dried deposits. A cooling-system pressure test can help identify seepage that is difficult to see.
Can the cap also cause coolant loss?
Yes. A defective pressure cap may allow coolant to escape, so it should be checked alongside the reservoir.
When should the coolant level be checked?
Allow the engine to cool fully before checking or opening the reservoir. Never remove the cap while the system is hot.
