Coolant temperature is an important parameter for both engine performance and cooling-system management. As the engine warms from a cold start to normal operating temperature, the sensor continuously provides temperature information that can be used by the ECU for temperature-dependent operating strategies.
The sensor operates in a demanding environment, exposed to hot coolant, pressure and repeated heating and cooling cycles. Over time, the sensing element or electrical connections can deteriorate, causing inaccurate, intermittent or implausible temperature readings.
A defective sensor may incorrectly report that the coolant is hotter or colder than it actually is. This can result in warning messages, diagnostic fault codes and incorrect engine-management behaviour.
